A poet and monk join forces to investigate a demonic cat who has possessed a general's wife and is wreaking havoc on the imperial court. The investigation takes an unexpected twist, leading the pair to unravel a mystery behind a decades old death of a legendary and beautiful courtesan.
"Curiously, cats are often linked to major political events, with legends of "demon cats" ranging from Washington to Asia. 'Kûkai' then traces a story that takes place over a thousand years ago in China's Tang Dynasty, in a story of love, drama and action. The feature film is part of the current big wave of Chinese cinema, with many special effects, beautiful photography and grand scenes - all in excess. After all, the budget of $170 million is grand even for Hollywood."
