Edward, civil servant, flees fiancée Molly on their wedding day in Rangoon, 1917. His travels replace panic with melancholy. Molly, set on marriage, amused by his escape, trails him across Asia.
"Directed by the Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes (winner of the Best Directing Award at Cannes 2024), Grand Tour is a film with a simple premise that hides something much larger. The "plot" is set in 1918, when Edward (Gonçalo Waddington), a colonial official in Burma, runs away on his wedding day and embarks on a journey through colonized Asia. Determined to marry him, his fiancée, Molly (Crista Alfaiate), follows him across the continent. However, what Gomes shows us doesn’t always belong to this fictional story; instead, it consists of documentary images from the present day in countries like Burma, Japan, Bangkok, and Vietnam. In this intersection of fiction and documentary, drama and contemplation, past and present, charming innocence and critical observation, Gomes sparks ideas and reflections on the colonial past of these countries, the legacy of colonizers in distant lands, and the mutual infection of societies and cultures."
