Grace Pudel is a book-loving, snail-collecting misfit that falls into a series of misfortunes after being separated from her twin brother Gilbert. Despite her hardships, inspiration and hope arise when Grace begins a friendship with an eccentric elderly woman named Pinky. From Academy Award-winning writer and director Adam Elliot, Memoir of a Snail is a heartfelt and hilarious chronicle of the life of an outsider finding her confidence and silver linings amongst the clutter of everyday life.
"Memoir of a Snail is a masterful stop-motion animation for adults, nominated for the 2025 Oscar and directed by Australian filmmaker Adam Elliot (Mary and Max). The story follows the life of Grace (voiced in English by Sarah Snook), told in retrospect by her, about her sad childhood, the separation from her twin brother (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), and her life as an adopted child. With a carefully crafted color palette and a production design that highlights the melancholy – but also the joy – of its characters, it is undeniably a sad film. However, that doesn’t mean it’s miserabilist or lacking beauty. On the contrary, it tells a powerful, realistic, yet optimistic story about learning to overcome life’s tragedies, embracing its joys, and moving forward. Guaranteed tears, along with a renewed sense of affirmation and hope."
