During World War II, a 16 year-old aspiring artist and her family are deported to Siberia amidst Stalin's brutal dismantling of the Baltic region. One girl's passion for art and her never-ending hope will break the silence of history.
"'Ashes In the Snow' is based on the book 'Life in Shades of Gray' by American author Ruta Sepetys, which was her debut novel. The story is heartbreaking, both in the literary work and in the film adaptation. Set in Lithuania during World War II, the movie follows the time when Lithuanians were exiled to Siberia and faced harsh living conditions. This historical context can be known, but it can be very hard to watch, just like stories about the Holocaust, which are also not easy to swallow. 'Ashes In the Snow' is a dry and necessary production, especially for those who do not have such a broad knowledge of World War II. Most of the films of this period focus on what happened to the Germans and Jews, but we know that the scars of the Great Wars were even wider. The movie is very well done, the work of the costume, scenery and soundtrack are highlights apart, as well as the cast, which moves anyone."
