"Las Lloronas" is an adaptation of the legend of "La Llorona"(Weeping Woman). It's based on the story of three generations of women within a Mexican familiy. Cursed by la llorona, these women fight to overcome the situations that arise by this. Through the struggles that these women face, they must eventually come to terms with destiny. "Las Lloronas" is a story of love, loss and triumph of the spirit, as well as the inner strength that each women has within.
"The legend of 'La Llorona' is one of the most popular in Mexican folklore, so it's not unusual for its adaptations or re-inventions to appear both in Mexican and international cinema (1933's 'La Llorona' by Ramón Peón is often cited as the beginning of Mexican horror films). For her debut as a director, screenwriter and producer, Mexican filmmaker Lorena Villarreal transported the famous legend to a contemporary context with a cast that combined rising stars such as Miguel Rodarte and Francisco Gattorno, established names like Rosa María Bianchi ('Amores perros'), and even cult favorites like Tina Romero (the protagonist of 'Alucarda, la hija de las tinieblas'). In terms of visual effects, the film is a product of Mexican cinematography of its time. Even if its script has some problems (and which also erratically oscillates between horror, drama and thriller), something very noteworthy about 'Las lloronas' is that it can be read as a metaphor of the problems faced by women in contemporary Mexico."
