A look at the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II.
"Based on Hayao Miyazaki's own manga of the same name, 'Kaze tachinu' is a biographical film with elements of fantasy and fiction, retelling the life of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi over several decades. It may be somewhat controversial to Western audiences, as Horikoshi was the designer of the legendary and deadly Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" warplane, used by the Japanese Empire during the attack on Pearl Harbor and World War II. However, being Miyazaki's last film before his temporary retirement, there is a palpable feeling of anti-war melancholy and a love letter to beauty that is often corrupted, victim of political or economic interests. Therefore, it is a movie that takes some liberties with historical facts, but it is a small price to pay. After all, once again, this is considered another masterpiece from the legendary animator and director, as well as one of the greatest animation gems of all time."
