"After 'Superman III', the rights to the character fell into the hands of Cannon Films, famous for its low-budget productions in the 1980s. Christopher Reeve only agreed to return to the character that made him famous after a deal with the new production company involving a script with a message of peace in times of the Cold War. Gene Hackman also agreed to come back to play Lex Luthor. Even with all this, the Man of Steel was a victim of a troubled and rushed production, and an editing that removed several passages from the final cut. It lacks direction, acting, special effects, practically everything ... A melancholy end to the saga of the character. Anyway, it's still Christopher Reeve's Superman, which used to be great and still has its merits."
