The Exorcism of God

"Latin American horror films are still relatively new, so there is still much to explore. Director Alejandro Hidalgo is one of the pioneers of the supernatural in Venezuela, and this is his second film, following the highly acclaimed "La casa del fin de los tiempos" from 2013. In "El exorcismo de Dios," Hidalgo also wrote the screenplay, along with Santiago Fernández Calvete. The story has strong influences from the classic 1973 film "The Exorcist," one of the filmmaker's inspirations. Some scenes, in fact, make this clear. It is a very well-made production, despite its low cost, although some exaggerated aspects end up affecting the narrative, specifically the religious theme by showing Jesus possessed by a demon. Choosing a simpler plot, like in Friedkin's film, would have been more interesting. But in summary, "El exorcismo de Dios" succeeds in adding to the construction of Latin American horror films, and Alejandro Hidalgo solidifies himself as one of the names to follow in the genre."
