Flavia Ribeiro meets 8 female ex-offenders with whom she helped as a volunteer in the Women's Chain, city of Santos. Together, in a inhospitable and precarious space, they transformed anguish into art, rebellions into dialogue, despair into hope.
"Often when thinking of a female prison, the popular American series 'Orange is the New Black' comes to mind, which does not show the reality of this scenario. On a national level, if you want to understand more about the life of former inmates, an excellent recommendation is 'Flores do Cárcere'. The documentary, based on Flavia Ribeiro de Castro's homonymous book, brings real testimonies and scenes recorded in the Santos prison in 2005. The feature follows 5 women who were imprisoned reflecting on how this experience was and how their lives are now, since reintegration into society is another problem. 'Flores do Cárcere' is a very important movie not only about the Brazilian prison system, but also about women."
