In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly persuades Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
"When it comes to movies about gangsters and other real-life decadent criminals, the obligatory reference is Martin Scorsese, with films like 'Goodfellas' or even 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. However, 'Black Mass' is a great addition to this select list, with a script based on the book 'Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance between the FBI and the Irish Mob' written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill, about the gangster reign of the infamous James "Whitey" Bulger. Obviously, the main attraction is - questionable makeup aside - Johnny Depp's brutal performance, in one of his most shocking and underrated roles of his career. However, there's a lot to see here, from a well-told police drama to a fabulous cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Corey Stoll and Jesse Plemons."
