Maria, the mother of television presenter Lisa Wartberg, has an accident with memory loss. All she can remember is that she has never been to New York. Without further ado, the elderly woman smuggles herself aboard a cruise ship.
"Unusual for German cinema, 'Ich war noch niemals in New York' (literally translated as 'I have never been to New York') is based on the colorful theatrical musical of the same name by Christian Struppeck, which in turn uses songs by Austrian composer Udo Jürgens in a similar way to how 'Mamma Mia!' uses ABBA’s songs. On screen, the musical pays homage to the exuberant Hollywood films of the 1940s and 50s such as Vincente Minnelli's 'The Band Wagon' or Stanley Donen's 'Singing in the Rain'. From production design to the extravagant plot, everything in this cheerful film recalls productions from that era, but it has to be said, it is weaker in comparison when it comes to the vocal talent of its cast. It could be said that it is Germany's answer to a film like 'La La Land: A Love Story', in the sense that it is a postmodern tribute to a type of cinema that marked an era, although it hardly equals it in quality."
