Why watch this film?
“Moana 2” reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
"Moana 2 is one of those films with a questionable past: the project originally started as a series for Disney+ until top executives realized they needed a movie, not more streaming content. Midway through, they changed the story’s format. In other words, the odds of failure were high. But the good news is that this apparent patchwork approach, made while the project was already underway, doesn’t cause too much trouble. The film begins with Moana being tasked with exploring the seas to find new peoples, preventing the inhabitants of her island from disappearing—an ongoing dilemma for small island communities around the world to this day. Despite a rocky start filled with plot holes and characters who appear without much purpose, like a goddess who initially seems to be the villain, Moana 2 manages to find its course by the halfway point. It becomes a beautiful story about friendship, family legacy, and above all, the need to connect with others. It’s touching, fun, and, above all, knows how to move its audience with a conclusion deeply rooted in the protagonist’s origins (who, let’s not forget, is still not a princess!)."
