Why watch this film?
In Monterrey, Mexico, a young street gang spends their days dancing to slowed-down cumbia and attending parties. After a mix-up with a local cartel, their leader is forced to migrate to the U.S. but quickly longs to return home.
"Fernando Frías de la Parra's film 'Ya No Soy Aqui' won Best Mexican Film and Audience Award at the 2019 Morelia Film Festival, and was selected for the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival. Set in Northern Mexico, the story follows a teenager who identifies as "cholombiano", a countercultural movement that has almost disappeared due to violence and involvement in drug trafficking, which mixes Mexican aesthetics with decades of Colombian cultural influence, particularly a taste for cumbia. The result is a typical portrait of Latin America, though almost unknown to Brazilians."
