Haiti, 1962. A man is brought back from the dead only to be sent to the living hell of the sugarcane fields. In Paris, 55 years later, at the prestigious Légion d’honneur boarding school, a Haitian girl confesses an old family secret to a group of new friends never imagining that this strange tale will convince a heartbroken classmate to do the unthinkable.
"Released during the Directors' Fortnight at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, 'Zombi Child', from French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello ('Saint Laurent'), is inspired by the life of Clairvius Narcisse, a man who claimed to have been turned into a zombie by Haitian vodou magic. It's an unconventional horror story that invites deeper reflections on colonialism, racism and cultural appropriation. Issues with roots deeply buried in the past, but with impacts that can be felt in the present, no matter how much one wants to leave them behind. Aesthetically inspired by Italian horror films known as "giallo" (from which movies like Dario Argento's 'Suspiria' emerged and recent films like 'Neon Demon' were inspired) and with themes that bring it close to its Senegalese contemporary 'Atlantique', this movie works as pure entertainment, but will still leave you reflecting long after the credits roll."
