In 1921 Shanghai, a reserved Japanese writer navigates a bustling city, observing its people and contemplating China's future.
In 1921, the already acclaimed young Japanese writer Akutagawa Ryunosuke agreed to serve as the Osaka Times' correspondent in Shanghai for six months. This short film, based on his journals, shows how the reserved and somewhat sickly journalist goes about observing and interacting with the denizens of the teeming city, and begins to form an impression of China's future.
