Why does a photographer make portraits? A safe conduit for connection to others? Shielding one's own vulnerability by capturing another person's vulnerability in a frame? Suzanne Opton has a long and celebrated career, a Guggenheim Fellowship, billboards in eight American cities of her soldier portraits sparking a passionate debate about issues of art and soldiering and pieces in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress and Smithsonian American Art Museum. 'Endlessly an Observer' is an intimate portrait of a portrait maker and Vermont artist. Sitting with an artist in her studio space, reviewing her portfolio of images for a pensive reflection on a lifetime's worth of work, a nearly 3 decade long survival of cancer and coming to find meaning in both one's art and the beautiful simplicity of a life in rural Vermont.
