Elizabeth Sankey’s deeply personal documentary examines the relationship between the cinematic portrayals of witches and the all-too-real experiences of postpartum depression by utilizing footage that spans the entirety of film history alongside heartrending personal testimony.
"Witches is a film directed by singer and filmmaker Elizabeth Sankey that blends documentary and essay to deconstruct the figure of witches in popular imagination. What is, in reality, a witch? Throughout history, women who were misunderstood, deviated from established norms of knowledge, or suffered from mental illnesses that couldn’t be diagnosed were accused of witchcraft and condemned for it. Sankey draws from her own experience with postpartum mental illness to explore the stories of women who didn’t survive due to ignorance about psychological disorders, reclaiming both the witch archetype and the stories of women like her."
