Why watch this film?
This subversive documentary unpacks the tricks brands use to keep their customers consuming — and the real impact they have on our lives and the world.
"Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy is a Netflix documentary that exposes real problems with consumerism, although it reveals nothing new and does so using problematic resources. Through testimonies from former executives of corporations like Apple and Amazon, the film explains how marketing operates to encourage constant consumption while diverting attention from ecological implications, or how companies use tricks to avoid accountability under minimal legislation, creating a narrative where "responsible consumption" by ordinary people is portrayed as the solution to saving the planet. However, not only is none of this new, but the documentary also uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to create several of its images. Given the high energy consumption of AIs, the film's message becomes condescending and hypocritical, even though the issue it highlights is relevant"
