"In the shadow of the phenomenon that was the movie Barbie in recent pop culture, it's easy to overlook the more problematic aspects of the culture that the doll itself has historically represented. Black Barbie is a documentary that recounts the complicated path to the creation and launch of Mattel's first Barbie doll with black skin in 1980 (over 20 years after the brand was created). Although the documentary sometimes leans towards praising Mattel, it manages to explore the political, social, and economic complexities of racial representation."
