Why watch this film?
Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life, a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person, and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader. Starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer, the film is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou.
"Kinds of Kindness is an incisive anthology comedy from Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), reuniting him with frequent collaborators like Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley (Poor Things), and other prominent actors such as Hong Chau (The Whale) and Jesse Plemons (Civil War), the latter of whom was awarded at Cannes for his performance in this film. Here, Lanthimos tackles a triptych of stories about the human condition: one man trying to take control of his life, another man disturbed by the personality of the wife he thought had disappeared, and a woman searching for a person destined to be a spiritual leader. The tone and style are more aligned with Lanthimos's roots in the Greek Weird Wave cinema, with scenes that are as surreal and bizarre as they are emotionally distant. This, along with the anthology structure, may make the film feel more scattered, strange, and distant than the director's more recent Hollywood offerings, but those willing to embrace its terms of caustic – almost misanthropic – humor will thoroughly enjoy it."
