Georgia’s former prime minister has found a unique hobby. He collects century-old trees, some as tall as 15-floor buildings, from communities along the Georgian coast. At a great expense and inconvenience, these ancient giants are uprooted from their lands to be transplanted in his private garden.
"Often, metaphors are the best way to explain the world. ‘Domesticating the Garden’ is a documentary from Georgia that lets the images speak for themselves to tell the story of a former prime minister of the country, who has an "eccentric" taste: collecting ancient trees from the Georgian coast in his private garden. To do this, he sends workers to uproot them from their soil and take them back, regardless of the difficulties this absurd action (we could even call it "Fitzcarraldic") causes at the source and destination sites of the trees. Thus, ‘Domesticating the Garden’ is a surprisingly beautiful portrait of human cruelty, despotic power, and the values of contemporary Georgian (and global) society, but also of the spirit of resistance in the natural world to resist exploitation by humans. Presented at the Sundance Film Festival, Ambulante, and winner of the Audience Award and International Competition at FICUNAM 2021."
