Why watch this film?
Venice Film Festival, 2019. A teacher, wrongfully arrested for abuse of authority, scolds her father who tries to free her. Confused, he confronts her, and tries to unravel the complicated stories and intertwined secrets of a past that haunts them.
"Movie exploring the relationship between father and daughter, 'Guest of Honour' is an intriguing film: it tells the story of Jim (David Thewlis), a food inspector trying to get his daughter Veronica (Laysla De Oliveira), a high school teacher wrongfully accused of sexual assault, out of jail. But the situation changes when Veronica says she doesn't want to leave jail. From there, with direction and screenplay by Atom Egoyan ('The Sweet Tomorrow'), we follow the hard unfolding of this situation, delving into a drama that moves between family pain and the feelings of each of the characters. Special mention to Thewlis (from the 'Harry Potter' saga) who, as in 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things', manages to put strangeness in his character and raise the tone of the feature film."
