Why watch this film?
In the 1940s, a Japanese merchant leaves his wife behind in order to travel to Manchuria, where he witnesses an act of barbarism.
"This is one of the best films from Japanese filmmaker, critic, and professor Kiyoshi Kurosawa, best known for horror features such as 'Pulse'. 'Supai no tsuma' is a period thriller set in Japan during the early days of World War II, dealing with intricate plots, domestic dramas, and crossed loyalties in the purest Hitchcockian tradition. It may be a bit too conventional for what Kurosawa is used to (he won the Silver Lion at the 2020 Venice Film Festival for Best Director), but that's not a negative: when it comes to espionage thrillers, this is by far one of the best of its decade."
