For many Asian American women (and other women of color), Claudia Kishi was the first time they saw themselves in popular media. A main character in the best-selling Baby-Sitters Club books, she was one of the only Asian Americans in 80s-90s popular culture. Not only was Claudia a rare Asian American protagonist, but she also defied stereotypical portrayals of Asian characters: she was creative, popular, and (gasp!) bad at school. The story of The Baby-Sitters Club was very important as it was one of the first representations of diversity in the media. The characters are from various backgrounds, Asian, Black and Latinx. One of the protagonists is Claudia Kishi, who is the vice president of the club, and has become an icon among Asian women. Kishi was one of the only characters with Asian ancestry present in American popular culture in the 1980s and 1990s. Beyond representation, Kishi defied stereotypes by being described as creative, popular, and getting bad grades in school. The documentary 'The Claudia Kishi Club' talks about an entire generation that had Claudia Kishi as an icon and her importance for the formation of many teenagers who grew up consuming movies, books and series with the absence of Asian characters."
