American films where the originals are better

Hollywood has a long tradition of adapting foreign films for American audiences, often tweaking cultural or narrative elements to make them more accessible. However, the magic of the original isn't always captured in these reinterpretations. In some cases, the originals shine with more authentic performances, bolder scripts, or a unique sensibility that gets lost in translation. In this list, we spotlight American films based on foreign productions available to stream, comparing them to their inspirations, such as A Man Called Ove and its adaptation A Man Called Otto, and analyzing why the originals stand out as more remarkable experiences.

This is a story full of emotion, tackling life, death, old age, companionship, longing and depression. Among so many feelings and a dose of sentimentality, director Hannes Holm tells a beautiful story, showing that we are much more than the shell we show to the world. It will certainly make you cry - be moved by the story or for having known some Oves during life.

"A Man Called Otto", the Swedish film from 2015, became an unexpected success around the world. It had good box office, won Oscar nominations. Naturally, then, eight years later an adaptation from the United States arrives with "The Worst Neighbor in the World". Produced and starred by Tom Hanks ("Elvis"), the film makes a basic remake, as we expect from these American adaptations, but knows how to move. To do this, the story follows Otto (Hanks), a grumpy old man who gave up on life after the loss of his wife and wants to end it all. But when a young family moves into the neighborhood, he finds a refreshment with the perceptive Marisol (Mariana Treviño), leading to a friendship that will change his world. It's an obvious and somewhat beaten plot, even before the Swedish film conquered the world, but it works for a very specific reason: to make you cry. Even though it is directed by the very weak Marc Forster ("007: Quantum of Solace"), the feature film has heart. Obviously, it takes advantage of many successes of the original to build this narrative and, in its mistakes, tries to find solutions - such as the relationship with the neighbor, which in this North American version is much more alive and true. Hanks also does very well: although recycling what Rolf Lassgård did very well, he finds particularities for his Otto. In the end, those who embark on the proposal and forget the original, will not be able to follow the credits with tears taking over the eyes.

This Nordic thriller is able to, like few movies, create suspense and dread through a lack of information, from what we don't see - and by what we slowly start to uncover. The story begins when a policeman on emergency call duty receives a phone call from a kidnapped woman. With few clues about the case, stuck in a closed room and without help from his superiors, a search for her liberation starts. With a great script (with its twists), good soundtrack (which helps to create the atmosphere) and impeccable acting from the protagonist, 'Culpa' is recommended for those who enjoy a good mystery procedural.

One of the sensations of European cinema in 2018, the Danish feature film 'The Guilty' drew attention for its inventiveness of plot (and endless tension!) despite almost all of its story taking place in a room with endless phone calls. Now, this production gets an American remake three years later. In the lead role, Jake Gyllenhaal. He is a policeman who, demoted, goes to work as a telephone operator at 911 -- the Brazilian 190. However, on an already tense day of work, he ends up answering a call from a woman who says she has been kidnapped by her partner. From there begins a hunt that, despite some slips from director Antoine Fuqua ('Training Day'), continues with the same essence of the original: emergency calls in the best style, desperation and a twist that always leaves the audience shocked. Although the original is more interesting and less theatrical, 'The Guilty' is a good movie to pass the time, mainly due to Gyllenhaal's good performance. Have you seen the Danish one? The experience will certainly not be as good. Otherwise, get ready for some surprises.

The Bélier Family is a French film that gained much more recognition in 2022 when its American remake, CODA, won the Oscar for Best Picture. However, it’s still worth giving this honest, moving, and original French version a chance. It tells the story of a teenage girl, the daughter of deaf parents, who discovers she has a gift for singing. The film captivates with its simplicity and even manages to draw a few tears in its final minutes, with scenes that skillfully touch the heart and stir the audience's emotions.
