Why watch this film?

Fancy Dance is a drama that Lily Gladstone filmed concurrently with Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, and it deals with similar themes: the systematic marginalization of Native American peoples. The plot follows a Cayuga woman (Gladstone) who, after her sister's disappearance, tries to keep custody of her niece (Isabel DeRoy-Olson). However, when custody is taken away, she decides to flee with her to attend the Powwow, an important ceremonial dance. The feature debut of filmmaker Erica Tremblay addresses how the law and bureaucracy are against racial minorities in the United States, hindering the investigation to find a missing person, but quickly seizing custody of a child from her family. Everything is grounded by Lily Gladstone's performance, which, unsurprisingly, is spectacular.
