Jesús López is an Argentine film that won an award at the Mar del Plata Film Festival and was selected for the San Sebastián Film Festival, using magical realism to address issues such as mourning and identity. The plot is set in a small town in the Argentine province where the titular character, a race car driver, has died in an accident, leaving his family and friends devastated. His cousin Abel (note the symbolism of the names), a directionless teenager, moves in with Jesús's parents, and soon begins to fill the void left by him: with his uncles, his friends, and even his girlfriend. At first, he is accepted, but his similarity soon begins to generate rejection. A film to reflect on how we forge our identity, how we relate to others, and ultimately, how we establish our individuality from ourselves and from others.

Seeking answers about her father, they embark on a journey to Uruguay, where they must transform their bond. This road movie moves at a slow, contemplative pace, focusing more on exploring feelings than events, which may seem too simplistic for those looking for complex dramas. However, it's an emotional film, and the performance of the legendary Carmen Maura (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) is definitely worth watching.
My First Film
Many filmmakers spend their lives trying to sustain their creative careers, unaware of their missteps. In My First Film, the debut feature of director Zia Anger (who has created videos for artists like Mitski and Beach House), we see the opposite: a filmmaker who looks back and reconstructs what went wrong in her disastrous first attempt when she was younger. Past and present blend with reality and fiction (featuring artists like Odessa Young), in a film that recreates not just events but emotions. There are many meta and revisionist films, but My First Film is the most fascinating since 2018's Shirkers, at the very least.
